Free Photoshop Actions speed up your workflow in Photoshop, and help to make your images wildly more creative than they are “out of the camera.” While there are lots of cool paid commercial Photoshop actions around (I especially like Kevin Kubota’s Actions), there are also may free actions that work really well too.
This page is (going to be) a catalog of some of the actions I use most and the first ones are free Photoshop actions I have created to help my nature photography look more WOW!
This first set of free Photoshop actions uses the LAB color space to jazz your colors in a way that Hue and Saturation just can’t do. You don’t need to worry about knowing what LAB color is to use this action. Just try it on any landscape image, deserts, rocks, mountains, canyons are all great candidates for image improvement using this free action.
FREE ACTION #1
This action uses LAB color to jazz your images. To learn more about the LAB color space and how you can take advantage of this little-known Photoshop tool, be sure to get Dan Margulis’ authoritative LAB color book.
While it is quite a technical and in depth book, it’s designed so that if you only need to know the basics you can skip the technical chapters.
Anyway, download my FREE Photoshop action for Basic LAB color adjustments and you’ll be well on your way to jazzier nature photos. This is a zip file. Right click to download to your computer, unzip, and store in a file that you will remember. Visit the Actions Video page to get the installation instructions.
Drag the handle back and forth across the image to see the before & after views.
The were no other adjustments made to this image other than running the LAB Action. You can see how it easily and cleanly differentiates the subtle colours of the landscape without any gross distortions or unreal colors.
It’s a MUST for digital landscape photography!
